The new measures of the United States towards Cuba have materialised. On Thursday 2 May, Title III of the of the Cuban Freedom and Democratic Solidarity (Libertad) Act of 1996 (better known as the Helms-Burton Act) was activated for the first time, opening the door to claims in U.S. courts in connection with properties that were nationalised in Cuba at the time of the Revolution and that are currently being used by third parties. The international reaction to this development has been important, especially in the European Union.
